Correspondence, diaries, and miscellaneous papers of three generations of the Paine family of Virginia. Represented are Dr. John W. Paine (of Londonderry, Ireland, and Lexington, Va., including a diary, 1817, concerning his migration from Londonderry to Halifax, Nova Scotia), his sons William G. Paine ([1816?-1880] of Richmond, Va., including letters concerning his business, Kent, Paine & Company, and blockade running during the Civil War, and railroad passes, 1868-1873, issued to him as vice-president of the Richmond and York River Railroad Company) and Henry Ruffner Paine (including a diary, 1861, concerning his service in the Rockbridge Artillery attached to the 1st Virginia Regiment, in the army of the Confederate States of America); and the diary, 1864, of an unidentified Union soldier serving under General John McAllister Schofield in Georgia.
